5 Signs You Need a New HVAC System

If you notice any of these 5 signs, it’s time to replace your old HVAC system for a new model.

1. Your HVAC System Is 10+ Years Old

When properly maintained, an HVAC system should last at least 10 years although we have seen routine maintenance extend this time to 12-14 years!

Regardless, when your HVAC system hits that 10 year mark, even if it is running well, it's time to start planning to replace that unit. Start proactively setting money aside for it so that when it comes time to replace it, when it does become dysfunctional.

Another thing to consider is that technological advances that take place over the lifespan of your unit. Even the most effective, efficient units from 10 years ago cannot stand up to a standard unit today as far as efficiency and effectiveness are concerned.

2. Increasing On Time

As your system ages and nears the time for it to be replaced, you’ll notice that it turns on more frequently. It might also need to stay on longer in order to reach the desired temperature inside your home.

This can be a result of bad coils or a failing blower motor. So we check these parts before ordering a new installation.

If your coils and blower motor are fully functional, then these are signs that your A/C system is not functioning as intended and is needing to work harder than it should to maintain the desired temperature.

Sometimes, even after a successful repair, your system will still run for a significantly longer period of time, more than it used to. If that happens, it’s time to replace the unit.

3. Loud Noises

HVAC systems become louder as they age. When you notice the following noises, it might be a sign that you need a replacement:

  • A louder than normal humming sound heard inside the house could be your blower

  • The unit on the exterior of the home becoming louder

  • Sometimes a furnace will generate a low groan or a banging sound

  • Excessive noise prior to start up

Any one of these symptoms could mean that your HVAC system is nearing the end of its life. Repairs may be in order here as well, but if the symptoms remain after a repair that can mean it’s time to replace the system.

4. You Don’t Perform Regular Maintenance

As we’ve discussed in our previous blog post: HVAC Maintenance Agreement: Do I Really Need It? Regular maintenance on your HVAC system is vital to prolonging the life of your current unit as long as possible.

Our Priority Client Maintenance Agreement ($150 per year at the time of this writing) is worth every penny! Included in this agreement is 2 yearly maintenance appointments of your HVAC system.

Routine maintenance helps to recognize and prevent smaller issues before they have the opportunity to lead to bigger issues. Most of the units that we end up replacing are units that have not been routinely cleaned and kept in good, safe operating order.

5. Excessive Need for Repairs

All HVAC systems will eventually need a full replacement however many components of the system can be repaired or replaced to keep the system running longer.

Excessive repairs however can be costly. Replacing some parts of your system can cost $1000+ just for a part, that doesn’t include the labor to remove the old part and install the new one. Having to pay for 2 or 3 repairs a year really adds up.

The cost of replacing a new unit is daunting, there is no doubt about it but here at Oceanview Heating and Air Conditioning we pride ourselves on offering high quality, affordable repair and replacement services that will put as little burden on your wallet as possible.

Some other things to consider when thinking about replacing your HVAC system are:

  • Property value- replacing your old system actually does increase the property value of your home so some, or possibly all of the cost can be recaptured when you eventually sell your home.

  • Efficiency- As mentioned earlier, new developments in comfort control technology lead to newer HVAC units functioning much more efficiently, it is not uncommon to see electric bills decrease by a noticeable margin after installing a new system, especially in the heat of the summer!

  • Optimized HVAC system- We see a lot of units that were improperly installed by builders or homeowners previously. Installing a new system and correcting issues like bad duct design or improper load calculations can actually decrease the cost of your electric bill and increase your comfort level.

  • Cost- The cost of installing a new HVAC system really depends on many factors including the size and age of your home, the climate of our location, your current duct design/layout and more. Most replacements that we perform cost between $5000-$12000 depending on these and other factors. We do offer free estimates on new installs if you would like to know for sure what it would cost you to replace your HVAC systems!

  • Time to replace- Normally, if the materials and equipment needed to replace your HVAC unit are available we can replace your system in one 8-10 hour work day.
